Racing in Europe
The UK is fairly strongly represented in Europe at the moment with Karen Darke (H2) and Rachel Morris (H3) regularly winning their categories, and Rob Wickham (H2) and Chris Madden (H2) usually placing somewhere in the top 5. We have strength in depth on the male side as well, with myself (Jimmy Goddard; H2), Ali Corps-Bell (H2), Marc Poolman (H2) and Brian Alldis (H3) all finishing somewhere mid-table. In the male H2 category we are nearly reaching the critical mass where we have enough riders to race together as Team HandcyclingUK and work cohesively in order to get someone on the podium.
So come on, get involved…! By far the best way to get started is to get in touch with any of the riders mentioned above; all will be more than happy to help, and one of us can talk you through the process of entering a race, booking accommodation, flights and airport transfers and packing your bike up to fly. Most of us stay in the same hotel, so it’s always a social occasion and if Rob is about there is inevitably a post-race beer (or 2). For those that like to roam more independently and don’t want to approach us for advice I’ll put together an article ‘entering your first EHC race’ separately and post it on the website soon.
Lastly, do not put it off until you are ‘ready’. The reality is you are never fully ‘ready’, your first race will always be a learning experience, but until you make that step you will never know what you are missing out on.
HAPPY RACING!
