Handcycle Taster Days
The detailed program
Saturday
The Saturday sessions are open to all handcyclists irrespective of level, experience, condition and disability. For a newcomer to handcycling, it's an excellent opportunity to benefit from some structured coaching, and advice in terms of planning, preparation and training logs etc. There will be a number of experienced handcyclists present who will be happy to pass on advice and tips. The session will start with a warm up, followed by a 1 lap time trial for all. A variety of interval type exercises will be then done including team sprints and a short factored race. By the end of session, you will have had a good work out and developed a team spirit with those you are cycling with.
Sunday
The Sunday ride is suitable for those handcyclists who want to try riding a longer distance on roads which may include busy ‘A’ roads. The route can be long (up to 60 miles) and may take several hours (up to 7 hours) to complete. Details of the route will be supplied nearer the time. Where possible we will plan short cuts which can be used if the going gets tough. Please note there may be occasions where anyone wishing to leave a ride early may have to navigate back to the start on their own using a map supplied by the ride leader. If you want have a go, you should be capable of making simple repairs to your bike such as a fixing a puncture or a broken brake or gear cable. The ride leader and any other experienced cyclists will always try to help if they can. You will still need to bring along basic tools, cables, a spare inner tube, sufficient food and drink and clothing suitable for the weather. Good bike maintenance before a ride greatly helps to reduce the chance of a problem as it’s always easier to fix a problem at home than on the ride.
