British Cycling Disability Series
_Congratulation to Chris Madden, Rob Wickam and Brian Aldis who took the top three places in this year’s British Cycling Disability Series.
Unfortunately this years events were not well attended due to clashes with a number of important races in the European Handcycling Circuit but the good news is that several newcomers to the sport, including two ladies, raced competitively for the first time.

_The season started at Lancaster with a good turn out of 10 handcyclists
that included a few new handcyclists and some of the more seasoned
riders. After a fast start the bunch split into
small groups that worked together for the duration of the race. Rob and
Chris seemed to work very well together at the front and after a few
laps they pulled away from newcomer Brian
Aldis, a good effort by him to stay with them for a few laps though. After
about 40 minutes into the race it had to be temporarily stopped due to
an accident on the side of the track where a
mountainbiker had taken a fall. After about 15 minutes the race was
allowed to continue for a two lap sprint that resulted in Chris taking
first his first win of the season but only by a wheel
length.
As previously mentioned a number of events had to be cancelled after Lancaster due to lack of entries as many of the handcyclists had other racing commitments. A couple of other races went ahead through the season but with very low numbers.

At the end of July the Darley Moore circuit race produced a fast race
for 7 handcyclists on a relatively flat track. After a
fast start the varying abilities separated into small groups where Rob
Wickham and Chris madden took the lead and clearly pulled away from
everyone else. After an hours racing these
two handcyclists fought it out for the sprint that resulted in Chris
being the victor. A good effort by everyone involved on a good circuit
and for once in the sunshine, so an enjoyable
experience had by all. It was good to see a new face among the usual
racers, A wheelchair racer Simon Lawson decided to give handcycling
racing a try and took fourth position in his
first race behind another ex wheelchair racer, Brian Aldis in third.
Darley Moore was to be the final British Cycling event of 2011 as the next two races had to be cancelled due to lack of entries. A disappointing number of events, but the ones that did go ahead produced some exciting races. Hopefully the 2012 season will be more successful and draw more athletes into this exciting sport.
